The Reason Why I am studying Japanese

I'm actually half Japanese and half Chinese and I want to learn more about my cultural roots. At some point during Smith, I hope to pick up Chinese as well. However, my parents and my adviser basically told me that I would crash and burn if I took both at the same time in my first year. Therefore, I'm starting with Japanese first because I had some background knowledge.
